When should I renew my PR card?
You can generally apply when your PR card will expire in less than 9 months or after it has expired.
A PR card is usually valid for 5 years, although in some circumstances it may be issued for 1 year.
No. An expired PR card does not automatically mean you have lost your permanent resident status. However, you may have difficulty returning to Canada on commercial transportation without a valid PR card or appropriate travel document.
Generally, permanent residents must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within the previous 5 years. There are certain circumstances where time outside Canada can count toward the residency obligation.
A PR card is issued to people who are in Canada, and IRCC does not mail PR cards outside Canada. If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you may need a PRTD to return to Canada.
