FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many days do I need to live in Canada to apply for citizenship?

Most adult applicants need to have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the 5 years before applying. Certain time spent in Canada before becoming a permanent resident may count toward the calculation subject to applicable limits.

Most applicants between 18 and 54 years old must take the Canadian citizenship test.
Applicants aged 18 to 54 generally need to demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French.
If you were required to file Canadian income taxes, you may need to have filed for at least 3 years within the 5-year period before applying.
You may still be eligible, but your physical presence needs to be carefully calculated. The total time you spent outside Canada can affect whether you meet the 1,095-day requirement.
