Canada recognizes different relationship categories under the Family Class sponsorship program.

Spouse Sponsorship

If you are legally married, you may be able to sponsor your spouse for permanent residence in Canada. Your marriage must be legally valid and your relationship must meet IRCC’s requirements.

Best for

Legally married couples.

Common-Law Partner Sponsorship

You may qualify as common-law partners if you have lived together continuously in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 consecutive months. Evidence of your shared life and relationship may be required.

Best for

Couples who have established a qualifying common-law relationship.

Conjugal Partner Sponsorship

This category may apply in limited circumstances where a couple has a genuine relationship but cannot marry or live together because of significant barriers beyond their control.

Best for

Qualifying couples who cannot establish a marriage or common-law relationship.
