Two Work Permit Options, One
Goal: Work in Canada

Canada has two main types of work permits: employer-specific work permits and open work permits.
The type you may qualify for depends on your individual circumstances and the requirements of the applicable program.

Employer-Specific Work Permit

An employer-specific work permit allows you to work in Canada under the conditions listed on your permit, including the employer, occupation and location where applicable.

Canadian job offer

Employer documentation

LMIA or LMIA-exempt pathway

Employment contract

Work experience and qualification documents

Best for

Workers who have a qualifying Canadian job offer and meet the requirements for the applicable work permit program.

Open Work Permit

An open work permit can allow an eligible applicant to work for most employers in Canada without being tied to one specific employer. However, open work permits are only available in specific situations.

No specific job offer required

Employer flexibility

Available only in qualifying situations

Different eligibility rules apply

Best for

Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements for an open work permit category.

LMIA & LMIA-Exempt Work Permits

Not every employer-specific work permit requires an LMIA. Your employer and the specific work permit category determine whether an LMIA is required or whether the position qualifies for an exemption.

LMIA-required applications

LMIA-exempt applications

Employer Portal requirements

Offer of Employment number where applicable

Employment documentation

Work permit application support

Best for

Workers with a Canadian employer who need to understand whether their employment requires an LMIA or falls under an LMIA-exempt category.

A study permit is the document that allows most foreign nationals to study at a designated learning institution in Canada.
Yes. In most cases, you need a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution before applying for a study permit.
A Designated Learning Institution is a Canadian school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. You should verify that your chosen institution is on Canada’s official DLI list.
A PAL/TAL is generally required for many study permit applicants, although there are exemptions. From January 1, 2026, students entering eligible master’s or doctoral degree programs at public DLIs are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement.
You must demonstrate that you have enough money to cover your tuition, living expenses for yourself and accompanying family members, where applicable, and return transportation. The required amount depends on your circumstances and current IRCC requirements.
